Under manager Luiz Felipe Scolari, Portugal won all three group-stage matches against Angola, Iran, and Mexico before defeating the Netherlands 1–0 in the round of 16. A penalty shootout victory over England after a goalless quarterfinal took Portugal into the semifinals for the first time since 1966. The team lost 1–0 to France and subsequently fell 3–1 to host nation Germany in the third-place match, finishing fourth overall. The squad included Luís Figo, Cristiano Ronaldo, Deco, Ricardo Carvalho, and Pauleta.
