The design combined a predominantly white base with subtle gray horizontal pinstripes, a traditional polo collar with red trim, and a blue Nike Swoosh, drawing on American sporting aesthetics. The national team entered the tournament under manager Jürgen Klinsmann and competed in a demanding Group G alongside Germany, Portugal, and Ghana. The USA opened with a 2–1 victory over Ghana, followed by a 2–2 draw against Portugal and a narrow 1–0 defeat to eventual champions Germany. Finishing second in the group, the team advanced to the round of 16 before losing 2–1 to Belgium after extra time, despite a memorable goalkeeping performance by Tim Howard.
