Managed by Glenn Hoddle, Chelsea finished eleventh in the league and reached the FA Cup semifinals. The club finished sixth in the Premier League and won the FA Cup, defeating Middlesbrough 2–0 in the final at Wembley Stadium on May 17, 1997. It was Chelsea's first major domestic trophy since the 1970 FA Cup.
