- The 1995-96 season signalled a change in ambition at Chelsea. Glenn Hoddle, in his final season before becoming England manager, brought in Ruud Gullit from Sampdoria and Mark Hughes from Manchester United, while Dan Petrescu arrived during the campaign. Captain Dennis Wise remained a central figure in midfield. Chelsea finished 11th in the Premier League but reached the FA Cup semi-finals, where they lost 2-1 to Manchester United at Villa Park.
