The season opened with a 2-1 Supercoppa Italiana win over Parma in Tripoli, and the club went on to retain the Serie A title. In Europe they beat Real Madrid in the semi-finals, but lost the Champions League final to Milan on penalties at Old Trafford after a 0-0 draw. Pavel Nedvěd, Alessandro Del Piero, David Trezeguet and Gianluigi Buffon were the side's leading figures.
