Valencia reached the final by beating Leeds United in the semi-finals, setting up a rematch of European heavyweights against Bayern Munich in Milan. The final itself became football history: every goal in the match was scored from a penalty, with Valencia's opener and Bayern's equalizer both coming from the spot before the game finished 1-1 after extra time.
- The match went to a penalty shootout, still the only Champions League final ever decided that way, and Bayern goalkeeper Oliver Kahn saved two spot kicks to secure a 5-4 win for the German side.
