Chelsea, managed by player-manager Gianluca Vialli, won 1-0 thanks to a late strike from Gus Poyet, who was named Man of the Match. The victory came as reward for Chelsea's UEFA Cup Winners' Cup triumph the previous season, and gave the club another piece of European silverware to open the campaign.
