Despite a busy transfer window bringing in players including Patrick Kluivert and Leonardo, and Paolo Maldini being promoted to club captain, Milan could not find consistent form, suffering heavy defeats including a 3-0 loss to Inter and a 5-0 defeat to Roma.
- Milan finished a disappointing tenth in Serie A, one place better than the previous season but still well outside European qualification. The club's only consolation came in the Coppa Italia, where they reached the final after eliminating city rivals Inter 5-0 in the quarter-finals, only to lose the two-legged final to Lazio despite winning the first leg through a George Weah goal. Capello was dismissed at the end of the season. Made by Lotto and sponsored by Opel, this jersey is tied to one of the most turbulent periods in Milan's modern history.
