Manager Roberto Di Matteo, who had delivered that triumph, was sacked in November 2012 following a group-stage exit from the Champions League, and was replaced by Rafael Benitez as interim manager, whose appointment was met with hostility from supporters due to his history with rival club Liverpool.
- Despite the unrest, Chelsea progressed through the Europa League and reached the final against Benfica in Amsterdam. Fernando Torres put Chelsea ahead in the 60th minute, but Oscar Cardozo equalized from the penalty spot eight minutes later. With the match seemingly heading to extra time, Branislav Ivanovic rose to head home a Juan Mata corner in the 93rd minute for a dramatic 2-1 win, making Chelsea the first club to hold both the Champions League and Europa League titles at the same time.
