The team topped their group with an attacking side built around Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain and Carlos Tevez, and beat Mexico 3-1 in the round of 16 to set up a quarter-final meeting with Germany, a repeat of the 2006 quarter-final in which Argentina had lost on penalties.
- The quarter-final proved disastrous for Argentina, with Thomas Muller heading Germany ahead inside three minutes before Miroslav Klose scored twice and Arne Friedrich added another to complete a crushing 4-0 defeat. The result ended Maradona's hopes of becoming just the third person to win the World Cup as both player and manager, and he left his position as head coach shortly after the tournament.
