The team's group stage was famously unconvincing, with Portugal drawing all three matches, including a 3-3 thriller with Hungary in which Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice, and advancing only as one of the best third-place teams. In the round of 16 against Croatia, substitute Ricardo Quaresma settled a goalless deadlock with a header in the 117th minute of extra time.
