Botafogo posted one of the strongest records in the group stage, with the tournament's best attack and best defense, before reaching the knockout rounds. In the quarter-finals, Botafogo beat Atletico Mineiro 3-1 at the Maracana and held on for a 0-0 draw in the return leg to advance.
- The semi-final against Cruzeiro proved dramatic: Botafogo lost the first leg 5-3 in a thrilling match at the Mineirao after leading 3-2, but their strong overall points total from the earlier rounds gave them the advantage of only needing two draws to progress, and they held firm to reach the final against Santos, which they went on to win.
