Real Madrid finished as La Liga runners-up with 92 points, behind a dominant Barcelona side under Pep Guardiola, and were eliminated by Barcelona in the Champions League semi-finals, losing 3-1 on aggregate. Cristiano Ronaldo was prolific throughout the season, finishing with 53 goals in all competitions.
- The season's defining moment came in the Copa del Rey final at the Mestalla in Valencia, the first Clasico final in the competition since 1990. After a goalless 90 minutes, Ronaldo headed home a 103rd-minute winner from an Angel Di Maria cross to give Real Madrid a 1-0 win after extra time, ending an 18-year wait for the Copa del Rey and handing Barcelona their first defeat in a final of the competition since 1984.
