Drawn into a tough Group D alongside eventual champions West Germany and Yugoslavia, Colombia beat the United Arab Emirates 2-0 and lost to Yugoslavia 1-0, leaving them needing a result against West Germany to advance. Trailing 1-0 deep into stoppage time after a Pierre Littbarski goal, Colombia produced a dramatic equalizer when Carlos Valderrama fed a slide-rule pass to Freddy Rincon, who slotted through the German goalkeeper's legs in the 93rd minute to secure a 1-1 draw and send Colombia through to the knockout stage for the first time in their history.
- In the round of 16, Colombia faced Cameroon in a tense match that remained goalless after 90 minutes. In extra time, goalkeeper Rene Higuita, known for his adventurous style, was dispossessed by 38-year-old Roger Milla near the halfway line, allowing Milla to run the ball into an empty net, a costly error that has become one of the most replayed moments in World Cup history. Cameroon went on to win 2-1, eliminating Colombia, though Milla's Cameroon side continued on to the quarter-finals.
