In one of the biggest shocks in tournament history, Senegal, ranked 42nd in the world and playing in their first ever World Cup, beat defending champions France 1-0 in the opening match, with Papa Bouba Diop scoring the only goal after a driving run from El Hadji Diouf. The result set off national celebrations in Dakar, and Senegal's president declared a public holiday.
- Senegal continued their remarkable run, beating Sweden 2-1 with a golden goal from Henri Camara in extra time of the round of 16 to become just the second African nation ever to reach a World Cup quarter-final. Their journey finally ended with a 1-0 golden goal defeat to fellow surprise package Turkey.
