Going into the final day, Bayern led rivals Schalke 04 by three points but trailed on goal difference, meaning Schalke needed to win and hope Bayern lost or drew badly at Hamburg. Schalke beat Unterhaching 5-3 and began celebrating what they believed was the title, only for Bayern defender Patrik Andersson to score a stoppage-time free-kick in the 94th minute at Hamburg to secure a 1-1 draw and snatch the championship away at the last possible moment.
- Weeks later, under manager Ottmar Hitzfeld, Bayern completed a historic double by winning the UEFA Champions League, eliminating both the previous two winners, Manchester United and Real Madrid, on their way to the final against Valencia. The final at the San Siro finished 1-1 after both goals came from penalties, and Bayern won 5-4 on penalties in the so-called 'all-penalty final,' with goalkeeper Oliver Kahn saving three spot-kicks to earn player of the match honors and secure the club's first European Cup in 25 years.
