Under Sir Alex Ferguson, United led rivals Manchester City by eight points with six games remaining, but a stumble that included a 4-4 draw with Everton and defeats to Wigan and City allowed their neighbors to close the gap, leaving the two clubs level on 89 points heading into the final day.
- On the final day, United beat Sunderland 1-0 through a Wayne Rooney goal and briefly believed they had won the title as Manchester City trailed QPR 2-1 deep into stoppage time. City then scored twice in the space of two minutes, an Edin Dzeko header followed by Sergio Aguero's dramatic 94th-minute winner, to snatch a 3-2 victory and claim the title on goal difference, the only time the Premier League has ever been decided that way.
