- This away jersey was worn during Portugal's 2004 European Championship campaign, held on home soil under manager Luiz Felipe Scolari, who had led Brazil to World Cup glory just two years earlier. Built around a celebrated 'Golden Generation' of Luis Figo, Rui Costa, Deco and a breakout 19-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal suffered an opening-match shock, losing 2-1 to unfancied Greece despite a stoppage-time Ronaldo goal. The hosts recovered to win their group and advanced through the knockout rounds, beating England on penalties in the quarter-finals and the Netherlands in the semi-final, setting up a rematch with Greece in the final.
- At the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon, Portugal dominated possession and created the better chances, but a second-half header from Angelos Charisteas proved decisive, and Greece won 1-0 to complete one of the greatest upsets in tournament history, becoming European champions at odds of 150-1. Portugal became the first host nation to lose a European Championship final, and a tearful Ronaldo was consoled by teammates as the final whistle blew.
