- Die Continentale, a German insurance company, sponsored Borussia Dortmund's shirts in the late 1980s, part of the wave of German financial and insurance firms that took up shirt sponsorship deals in the Bundesliga during that decade.
- This diagonal chevron sleeve design was a recognizable Adidas template used across several European clubs in the late 1980s. Borussia Dortmund's yellow and black colors, worn since the club's founding in 1909, have earned the team the nickname Die Schwarzgelben, the black and yellows.
