- Etihad Airways became Manchester City's principal shirt sponsor in 2009, replacing Thomas Cook, as part of a wider commercial partnership that would eventually extend to the club's stadium naming rights. The sponsorship coincided with a period of major investment in the club following its 2008 takeover.
- The 2011-12 home kit paired Umbro's technical fabric with a checkered Blue Moon collar detail, a nod to the club's longstanding fan anthem. It was also the last era in which Manchester City wore the circular crest featuring the eagle and three stars, before the badge was redesigned later in the decade.
