The 1990-91 campaign alone saw four different head coaches, from John Toshack through Alfredo Di Stefano and Ramon Grosso to Radomir Antic, who eventually steadied the side to a third-place finish and a Supercopa de Espana win, with Emilio Butragueno topping the scoring charts. The following season began strongly under Antic, who led the league by three points before a controversial January sacking; his replacement, the returning Leo Beenhakker, could not hold on, and Real Madrid lost the title on the final day to Tenerife as Johan Cruyff's Barcelona claimed their first championship of the Dream Team era.
