- Italy entered the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France under head coach Cesare Maldini. The national team topped Group B after drawing with Chile and defeating Cameroon and Austria, before overcoming Norway in the round of 16. Their tournament ended in the quarterfinals against eventual champions France on 3 July 1998. Following a goalless draw after extra time, Italy were eliminated 4–3 in the penalty shootout.
- Nike supplied Italy's national team kits during the 1998 World Cup period, with the traditional Azzurri blue remaining central to the collection. The home design was characterized by a restrained royal-blue body, subtle vertical fabric detailing, a fold-over collar, and minimal white accents. The historic three-star crest represented Italy's World Cup victories in 1934, 1938, and 1982. The 1998 design also marked the closing stage of Nike's partnership with the Italian national team before Kappa took over in 1999.
