- Inter Milan's 1996/97 Umbro third shirt introduced a striking yellow-and-black design that contrasted with the club's traditional blue-and-black stripes. Its distinguishing feature was a pair of vertical black panels carrying repeated F.C. Internazionale lettering in decorative script, complemented by Pirelli sponsorship, a polo collar, and the club crest with a gold star. During the 1996/97 season, Inter competed under manager Roy Hodgson, with players including Javier Zanetti, Iván Zamorano, Youri Djorkaeff, Paul Ince, Maurizio Ganz, Aron Winter, and Giuseppe Bergomi. The team finished third in Serie A and reached the Coppa Italia semifinals. In the UEFA Cup, Inter progressed through a demanding European campaign to face Schalke 04 in the final, the competition's last final to be played over two legs. Schalke won the first leg 1–0 in Germany on 7 May 1997, before Zamorano scored in Inter's 1–0 second-leg victory at San Siro on 21 May. With the aggregate score level, Schalke won the penalty shootout 4–1. Maurizio Ganz finished as the UEFA Cup's leading scorer that season. The yellow Umbro design remains a distinctive example of Inter's experimental 1990s shirt styling, closely associated with the team's competitive domestic and European campaign.
