- Manchester City introduced their 2012/13 Umbro away jersey in July 2012, returning to the club's traditional maroon color, described as Zinfandel. The design drew inspiration from City's 1956 FA Cup Final shirt, with subtle vertical stripes, a tailored silhouette, and gold detailing around the Umbro logo, club crest, and Etihad Airways sponsorship. It was part of City's final season wearing Umbro before their switch to Nike in 2013.
- Under Roberto Mancini, Manchester City entered the season as defending Premier League champions and won the 2012 FA Community Shield with a 3–2 victory over Chelsea. They finished second in the Premier League and reached the FA Cup Final, where they lost 1–0 to Wigan Athletic at Wembley on 11 May 2013. City also exited the UEFA Champions League at the group stage after facing Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, and Ajax. The squad included Sergio Agüero, Carlos Tévez, Edin Džeko, Yaya Touré, David Silva, Vincent Kompany, and Joe Hart. Mancini departed in May 2013, bringing an end to the managerial era that had delivered City's first Premier League title.
