Under manager Berti Vogts, Germany progressed through the group stage against the Czech Republic, Russia, and Italy before defeating Croatia in the quarterfinals and host nation England on penalties in the semifinals. Germany then faced the Czech Republic at Wembley on June 30, 1996, recovering from a one-goal deficit to win 2–1 through two goals from Oliver Bierhoff, including the first golden goal in a European Championship final. The victory secured Germany's third European title and its first since reunification, making the green adidas design part of a significant era in the national team's history.
