- The 1997-98 season was Fila's first as Fiorentina's kit supplier, and the club's purple shirts with Nintendo and its Italian distributor GiG on the front quickly became some of the most recognisable in Serie A. Under Alberto Malesani, Fiorentina played attractive football and finished fifth, earning a place in the UEFA Cup, with a team built around the creativity of Rui Costa and the goals of Gabriel Batistuta. The season laid the foundations for the title challenge that followed under Giovanni Trapattoni.
- Gabriel Batistuta wore the number 9 shirt and was one of the most feared strikers in the world. The Argentine had stayed loyal to Fiorentina even after their relegation in 1993 and had become the club's captain and talisman, known for his powerful shooting and remarkable consistency. His goals and his celebrations, often charging towards the crowd with his machine-gun gesture, made him a hero in Florence and one of the defining figures of 1990s Italian football.
