- Fiorentina's 1998-99 season under Giovanni Trapattoni brought the club closer to the Scudetto than at any time in decades. The Viola led Serie A at the halfway stage and played some of the most exciting football in Italy, but injuries in the second half of the season, including one to Gabriel Batistuta, cost them momentum. Fiorentina finished third, securing a place in the Champions League, and also reached the Coppa Italia final, where they lost to Parma.
- Gabriel Batistuta wore the number 9 shirt and was the club's captain and talisman. The Argentine striker, known as "Batigol", was one of the most powerful and prolific forwards in the world, famous for his thunderous shooting and his loyalty to Fiorentina, whom he had stayed with even after relegation in 1993. He scored 21 Serie A goals that season and became the face of a team that captured the imagination of football fans across Europe.
