- Argentina arrived at the 1994 World Cup in the United States under coach Alfio Basile, having qualified only after a play-off against Australia. Diego Maradona returned to the squad for the tournament, and the team started brilliantly, beating Greece 4-0 and Nigeria 2-1 with an attacking line-up that included Gabriel Batistuta, Claudio Caniggia and Abel Balbo. After the Nigeria match, however, Maradona failed a doping test and was removed from the tournament. Without him, Argentina lost 2-0 to Bulgaria and were eliminated by Romania 3-2 in the round of 16.
- Maradona wore the number 10 shirt and, at 33, played his last matches for Argentina at this World Cup. Against Greece he scored a fine left-footed goal after a quick passing move and celebrated by running straight towards a television camera, an image that became one of the most famous of the tournament. He also played a central role in the win over Nigeria, providing a glimpse of the brilliance that had defined his career, including the 1986 World Cup triumph.
