- The Netherlands entered Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine as 2010 World Cup finalists under Bert van Marwijk, after winning nine of their ten qualifying games. However, they were drawn in a difficult group with Germany, Portugal and Denmark. On 13 June 2012, they faced Germany at the Metalist Stadium in Kharkiv, needing a result after losing their opening game to Denmark. Mario Gómez scored twice in the first half, and although the Dutch pulled one back in the second half, Germany won 2-1. A defeat to Portugal followed, and the Netherlands left the tournament without a point.
- Robin van Persie wore the number 16 shirt, with Klaas-Jan Huntelaar taking the number 9 he had worn at the 2010 World Cup. Van Persie arrived in excellent form after finishing as the Premier League's top scorer with Arsenal, and he scored the Netherlands' goal against Germany with a well-placed shot from outside the area. It was his only goal of the tournament, and a few weeks later he joined Manchester United, where he won the Premier League title in his first season.
