- France entered Euro 2000 in Belgium and the Netherlands as reigning world champions under coach Roger Lemerre. After winning their first two group games against Denmark and the Czech Republic, they beat Spain 2-1 in the quarter-finals and Portugal 2-1 after extra time in the semi-finals. In the final in Rotterdam on 2 July 2000, France trailed Italy until Sylvain Wiltord equalised in stoppage time, and David Trezeguet scored the golden goal to win 2-1. France became the first reigning world champions to win the European Championship since West Germany in 1972.

He scored a superb free-kick in the quarter-final against Spain and converted the golden-goal penalty that beat Portugal in the semi-final.
