- Perugia returned to Serie A for the 1998-99 season and made one of the most talked-about signings of the summer, bringing in Hidetoshi Nakata from Bellmare Hiratsuka after the 1998 World Cup. He became the second Japanese player in Serie A after Kazuyoshi Miura. Under coaches Ilario Castagner and later Vujadin Boškov, Perugia fought to stay in the top flight and secured survival with a 14th-place finish.
- Nakata wore the number 7 shirt and made an immediate impact, scoring twice on his Serie A debut against champions Juventus. He went on to score 10 league goals in his first season, his best single-season total in Italy, and his technique, vision and work rate quickly won over Italian supporters. His success also brought huge attention from Japan to Perugia. In January 2000 he moved to Roma, where he won the Scudetto the following year, but his Perugia shirt remains the most iconic of his Italian career.
