- The 1994 World Cup was the first to be held in the United States, and it remains the best-attended World Cup in history. Under coach Bora Milutinović, the US team drew 1-1 with Switzerland, beat Colombia 2-1 at the Rose Bowl and lost 1-0 to Romania, which was enough to reach the knockout stage. In the round of 16, they faced eventual champions Brazil on Independence Day at Stanford Stadium and were narrowly beaten 1-0. The tournament helped pave the way for the launch of Major League Soccer.
- Alexi Lalas wore the number 22 shirt and played every minute of the US campaign at centre-back. With his long red hair and goatee, he became one of the most recognisable players of the tournament and a symbol of the team's spirit. His performances earned him a move to Padova, making him the first American to play in Italy's Serie A, and he later returned home to play in MLS.
- This away shirt is one of the most famous designs of the decade, known for its denim-effect texture and bold white stars.
