Product Stats
- The 1998 World Cup in France was South Africa's first appearance at the finals, coming only a few years after the national team's return to international football. Under coach Philippe Troussier, Bafana Bafana were drawn with hosts France, Denmark and Saudi Arabia. They lost 3-0 to France in the opening game, then drew 1-1 with Denmark and 2-2 with Saudi Arabia, finishing third in the group and narrowly missing out on the knockout stage. Earlier that year, the team had also reached the final of the Africa Cup of Nations.
- Benni McCarthy wore the number 17 shirt and was one of the brightest young talents in African football, then playing for Ajax. He had starred at the 1998 Africa Cup of Nations, including four goals in one match against Namibia. At the World Cup, he started all three games and scored South Africa's first ever World Cup goal in the 1-1 draw with Denmark in Toulouse, slotting the ball between the legs of Peter Schmeichel. He later became the national team's all-time leading scorer.
- This home shirt is one of the most recognisable African football designs of the 1990s. Its stepped stripes in white, yellow and black, combined with the green collar and mesh side panels, give it a striking look that reflects the national colours. The front number and SAFA logo add to its tournament character. It appeals to South Africa supporters, McCarthy fans, World Cup collectors and anyone who loves bold Kappa designs from the late 1990s.
