- The 1997-98 season ended Real Madrid's long wait for European glory. Under head coach Jupp Heynckes, the club reached the Champions League final in Amsterdam on 20 May 1998 and beat Juventus 1-0, with Predrag Mijatović scoring the only goal. It was Real Madrid's seventh European Cup, known as La Séptima, and the first since 1966, ending a wait of 32 years. Domestic form was less convincing, with the team finishing fourth in La Liga.
- Fernando Redondo wore the number 6 shirt throughout his time at the club from 1994 to 2000, and he was a key figure in the 1997-98 campaign. The Argentine midfielder controlled games from deep with elegance and composure, setting the tempo and protecting the defence. He started the Amsterdam final, helping Real Madrid contain a Juventus side that was appearing in its third consecutive final. His calm presence made him one of the most respected deep-lying midfielders of the era.
