- Italy reached the final of Euro 2000 in Belgium and the Netherlands under Dino Zoff. After winning all three group games, they beat Romania in the quarter-finals and then overcame the co-hosts in Amsterdam, holding out with ten men and winning on penalties after Francesco Toldo saved twice. In the final against France in Rotterdam, Marco Delvecchio gave Italy the lead, but Sylvain Wiltord equalised in stoppage time and David Trezeguet scored a golden goal. Alessandro Nesta, Paolo Maldini and Fabio Cannavaro led a formidable defence.
