- Lazio's centenary season began on 27 August 1999 in Monaco, where Sven-Göran Eriksson's side faced European champions Manchester United in the UEFA Super Cup. Marcelo Salas scored the only goal as Lazio won 1-0. The campaign went on to become the greatest in the club's history, as Lazio won Serie A on the final day and also lifted the Coppa Italia against Inter. Pavel Nedvěd, Siniša Mihajlović, Alessandro Nesta and Diego Simeone were central figures.
- Juan Sebastián Verón was born in La Plata, Argentina, in 1975 and played for Estudiantes, Boca Juniors, Sampdoria and Parma before joining Lazio in 1999. Wearing the number 23, he made his debut in the Super Cup and was named man of the match. He became the driving force of Eriksson's midfield, scoring eight league goals, his best Serie A return, as Lazio won the Scudetto. In 2001 he moved to Manchester United for a then-English record fee.
