• Grêmio entered the late 1990s as one of Brazil's most successful clubs, having won the Copa Libertadores in 1995. In 1999 the team won the Campeonato Gaúcho, beating rivals Internacional in the final, a series in which a teenage Ronaldinho announced himself with a dazzling display that included skilfully beating experienced midfielder Dunga. The club's youth system was producing exciting talent, and Ronaldinho quickly became the face of the side.
• Ronaldinho was born in Porto Alegre in 1980 and joined Grêmio as a boy, making his professional debut in 1998. Wearing the number 10, he combined flair, vision and audacious skill, and in 1999 he also made his debut for Brazil, winning the Copa América and finishing as top scorer and best player at the Confederations Cup. He left Grêmio for Paris Saint-Germain in 2001 and later became a world star at Barcelona, winning the Ballon d'Or in 2005.
