- Manchester City began 2012-13 as English champions for the first time in 44 years and opened the season by beating Chelsea in the Community Shield. Roberto Mancini's side could not repeat their league success, finishing second behind Manchester United, and they went out of the Champions League in the group stage. City reached the FA Cup final but lost 1-0 to Wigan Athletic, and Mancini left the club shortly afterwards. Vincent Kompany, Yaya Touré, David Silva and Joe Hart remained central figures.
- Sergio Agüero was born in Quilmes, Argentina, in 1988 and became the youngest player to appear in the Argentine top flight when he debuted for Independiente at 15. After starring for Atlético Madrid, he joined City in 2011 and took the number 16 shirt. On the final day of his first season, his stoppage-time goal against Queens Park Rangers clinched the Premier League title, one of the most famous moments in English football. He went on to become the club's all-time leading scorer.
