- Rafael Benítez took charge of Napoli in 2013 after Edinson Cavani's departure and rebuilt the attack with Gonzalo Higuaín, José Callejón and Dries Mertens, joining Marek Hamšík and Lorenzo Insigne. Napoli finished third in Serie A and won the Coppa Italia, beating Fiorentina 3-1 in the final with Insigne scoring twice. In the Champions League they collected 12 points in a group with Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund but still went out on head-to-head record.
- Gonzalo Higuaín was born in Brest, France, in 1987 and rose to prominence at River Plate before spending six seasons at Real Madrid, where he won three La Liga titles. He joined Napoli in 2013 and took the number 9, quickly becoming the team's main goalscorer in his first season. His movement and clinical finishing made him a fan favourite in Naples, and in 2015-16 he went on to set a Serie A single-season scoring record.
