- In Carlo Ancelotti's first full season, AC Milan reached the 2003 Champions League final against Juventus at Old Trafford, wearing their traditional white for the occasion. After a goalless draw, goalkeeper Dida saved three penalties and Andriy Shevchenko scored the decisive kick to secure the club's sixth European Cup. Captain Paolo Maldini lifted the trophy 40 years after his father Cesare had done so for Milan, and the club also won the Coppa Italia against Roma. Andrea Pirlo, Clarence Seedorf and Alessandro Nesta were key figures.
- Rui Costa was born in Amadora, Portugal, in 1972 and came through Benfica before starring for Fiorentina, where he formed a celebrated partnership with Gabriel Batistuta. He joined Milan in 2001 and wore the number 10 as the team's creative playmaker. In 2002-03 he provided much of the vision in Ancelotti's midfield alongside Pirlo and Seedorf, and that run to European glory became one of the highlights of his career. He later returned to Benfica, where he eventually became club president.
