Roberto Di Matteo was dismissed in November and replaced by interim manager Rafael Benítez. The club lost the Club World Cup final to Corinthians, yet recovered to finish third in the Premier League. In the Europa League, Chelsea reached the final in Amsterdam and beat Benfica 2-1, with Fernando Torres scoring and Branislav Ivanović heading a stoppage-time winner.
