- Marcello Lippi's Juventus retained the Serie A title in 2002-03 and reached the Champions League final at Old Trafford after beating Real Madrid in the semi-finals. Pavel Nedvěd, who had driven the side all season, missed the final through suspension. Against Milan, the match finished goalless after extra time, and although Buffon saved penalties from Clarence Seedorf and Kakha Kaladze, Milan won the shoot-out 3-2 when Andriy Shevchenko converted the decisive kick.
- Gianluigi Buffon was born in Carrara in 1978 and made his Serie A debut for Parma at just 17. He joined Juventus in 2001 for a world-record fee for a goalkeeper and wore the number 1 shirt throughout his long spell in Turin. His reflexes, command of the area and composure made him the defensive cornerstone of Lippi's side, and he was named UEFA Club Footballer of the Year for 2003. Often called Gigi, he became one of the most decorated goalkeepers in football history.
