- Fiorentina began 1992-93 with high hopes after signing Stefan Effenberg and Brian Laudrup from Bayern Munich and Francesco Baiano from Foggia. Under Luigi Radice they sat second in December, despite a 7-3 home defeat to Milan, but Radice was dismissed in January after a loss to Atalanta. Aldo Agroppi, then Luciano Chiarugi and Giancarlo Antognoni, could not stop the slide, and the club finished 16th and were relegated after 55 years in the top flight.
- Gabriel Batistuta was born in Argentina in 1969 and joined Fiorentina from Boca Juniors in 1991, the same year he finished as top scorer at the Copa América. Wearing the number 9, he scored 16 league goals in 1992-93, the club's best return in a difficult season. Rather than leave after relegation, he stayed in Florence and helped Fiorentina win promotion straight back the following year. That loyalty, along with his goals, earned him the nickname Batigol and lasting legendary status.
