- Fabio Capello's Roma began 2001-02 as reigning Italian champions and opened the season by beating Fiorentina in the Supercoppa Italiana. The highlight of the campaign was a 5-1 derby win over Lazio, with Vincenzo Montella scoring four. Francesco Totti, Cafu, Emerson and Walter Samuel formed the core of a strong side, but Roma finished second in Serie A, one point behind Juventus, while their Champions League run ended in the second group stage.
- Gabriel Batistuta was born in Reconquista, Argentina, in 1969 and became a legend at Fiorentina before joining Roma in 2000, for what remains the highest fee ever paid for a player over 30. In his first season he scored 20 league goals in 28 appearances to help Roma win the Scudetto. For 2001-02 he switched from 18 to 20 in reference to that goal tally, though injuries limited his impact. Known as Batigol, he was also Argentina's leading scorer at the time.
