- The Netherlands arrived at the 1990 World Cup in Italy as reigning European champions, with Leo Beenhakker taking charge shortly before the tournament. Despite a squad featuring Marco van Basten, Frank Rijkaard and Ronald Koeman, they drew all three group matches against Egypt, England and the Republic of Ireland. That was enough to reach the round of 16, where they lost 2-1 to West Germany in Milan in a tense, ill-tempered match.
- Ruud Gullit was born in Amsterdam in 1962 and became one of the most complete players of his generation, winning the Ballon d'Or in 1987 and captaining the Netherlands to the Euro 1988 title. At AC Milan he lifted back-to-back European Cups, although knee injuries limited him in the months before Italia 90. Wearing the number 10, he scored the Dutch goal in the 1-1 draw with Ireland. He was widely known as the Black Tulip.
