The prominent Jack Daniel's sponsor gave the shirt a distinctive identity, reflecting the expressive style of late-1990s German football. The design was also carried over into the following season.
- After relegation from the Bundesliga in 1996-97, St. Pauli competed in Germany's second division during the 1997-98 campaign. The Hamburg club finished fourth, narrowly missing promotion back to the top flight.
